Astoria Gov. Kathleen Johnson eyeing U.S. Senate seat after six weeks on the job

Greenville, Ast. After one and a half months in the governor’s office, former U.S. Senator Kathleen Johnson (D-Ast.) seems all but fulfilled in her new role as chief executive of the Liberty State. Sources familiar with the situation told The Herald that Johnson appeared to have courted State House Democratic Leader and former U.S. Attorney General Shawn Bowman (D) as her heir-apparent. In this rumored reshuffle, Johnson could appoint herself as senator and hand the governor’s office over to Bowman, who would've joined her ticket as lieutenant governor in this month’s elections.

With war going on just a few hundred miles away and the fate of the nation at stake, Gov. Johnson’s interest in state politics may arguably be low; the image, however, of making Fink House nothing more than an advantageous step from Astoria back to D.C. will be all but appreciated by voters. And it might just be the worst-case first day as governor for an up-and-coming politician such as Bowman.

Democrats win back the House, secure 65 % of seats

After months of Conservative rule, the Democratic Party has regained control of the U.S. House of Representative in this month’s midterm elections. With former Vice President and recent House Speaker Ernie Sandhurst and former Vice President Meghan Cortez Kingston in the lead, Democrats will now have a comfortable 282–153 lead over the Republican Conference, whose results remained under their expectations. With only 35 % of votes nationwide, Reps.-elect Jacob Glenwood—a former Commerce Secretary—and former Vice President Carolyn Sperry will have to rebuild Republicans’ platform over the coming months. With 58 seats, Virginia Meyers, a former attorney general and Supreme Court justice, finishes the list of this freshman class. With the 84th Congress constituting on December 1, it will finally be agile again after former Speakers Michael O’Riley (SCU) and Beatrix Albert (Ind.) both lost their office in the past weeks which—once again—had caused the chamber to be void of members.
